Image Analysis
Seula measures sharpness, eyes, and content, then suggests where to start. It never picks or rejects a photo for you, and everything runs on your Mac.
Enable the features you want in Settings ▸ Stacks. Image ▸ Analyze This Folder runs only the enabled features.
Where it shows
- Recommendation marks the suggested starting photo.
- Alternative marks another photo worth comparing for a different reason, such as more open eyes, a different expression, or a different moment.
- Filter ▸ Image Analysis groups the folder by what the analysis found.
Click either suggestion mark to read its reason. If the explanation says the photos are equally strong or could not be compared, there is no clear winner.
The filter groups
- Possibly Unsuccessful: an overall assessment of exposure, composition, and how clearly the subject stands out. Check these photos yourself before deciding which to reject.
- Reference Shots: screenshots, receipts, signs, price tags. Photos taken as notes.
- Burst Suggestions: the recommendation and alternatives. The filter also works when Show Stacks is off; the suggested photos appear individually.
- Not Analyzed: not measured yet, or too small to measure.
When to doubt it
A suggestion depends on which subject Seula identifies in the photo. Identifying the subject can be difficult in group photos, when faces appear very small, or when a person is out of focus against a sharp background.
Checking and choosing the subject
Choose ⋯ ▸ Choose Primary Subject… in the top-right corner of the viewer to see which subject Seula uses to compare the photos in the burst. Click another subject to select it, or drag to draw a region around your subject.
If Seula can't find the subject in one of the photos, you'll see Subject not found in this photo. Click the subject or draw a region around it to include that photo in the comparison.
Restore Automatic for Burst (the curved arrow) restores the automatic subject for the whole burst and removes your custom regions. Press 1–9 to choose the corresponding numbered subject, 0 to restore the automatic subject, or Esc to close subject selection.
When it gets it wrong
Analysis is new, and your folders are the real test. If it picks badly or gets in the way, email support@seula.app: say what you expected, and if you can, attach the photo or burst. Anything you send is used only to look into your report.
