Common issues
A RAW file won't open or looks wrong
Seula relies on macOS's built-in RAW decoding. If a RAW won't render:
- Update macOS. Support for new camera models often arrives in a macOS update.
- Try the embedded preview. Turn on Settings ▸ Viewer ▸ Use embedded RAW previews only to display the camera's own JPEG preview.
- Confirm that the format is supported by Seula and by your macOS version.
My ratings don't show up in Lightroom
- In Lightroom, select the photos and choose Metadata ▸ Read Metadata from File, or re-import the folder.
- For RAW files, make sure the .xmp sidecar travelled with the photo. It must sit in the same folder, with the same name.
- For color labels, check that Lightroom's label set uses the standard names: Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple.
I moved my photos and the ratings disappeared
For RAW and most non-JPEG files, ratings live in the sidecar file next to the photo. When you move or copy photos in Finder, take the matching .xmp files with them. Ratings for JPEGs are stored inside the JPEG itself, so they travel with the file.
A photo shows the wrong rotation
Rotate it with the ] / [ keys, or use the rotate commands in the Image menu. Seula saves the orientation as metadata; for JPEGs this also corrects how Finder and Preview show the photo.
The folder list is out of date
If you add or remove files outside the app, Seula refreshes automatically when Auto-refresh on folder changes is on in Settings ▸ General ▸ Files. You can always reopen the folder to force a refresh.
I'm low on disk space
The thumbnail cache is purgeable; macOS frees it automatically when space is tight. To clear it yourself, choose Settings ▸ General ▸ Advanced ▸ Clear cache now, or turn off Cache thumbnails on disk.
I changed a shortcut and want it back
Open Settings ▸ Shortcuts, click the command's key, and set it again, or use Reset All to restore every default.
Frequently asked questions
Short answers about what Seula does, where metadata is stored, and how it fits into your workflow.
Does Seula edit my photos?
No. Seula is a culling tool, not an editor. Your image pixels are never changed; only metadata is written.
Can I use it instead of Lightroom?
Seula handles the culling stage: finding the keepers. It hands them off to Lightroom, Capture One, or any XMP-aware editor for the actual editing.
Where are my ratings stored?
In the JPEG itself for JPEGs, and in an .xmp sidecar for RAW and other formats.
Will it slow down my Mac?
No. Seula caches thumbnails in purgeable storage that macOS reclaims as needed, and it batches disk writes.
